Palin Film ‘The Undefeated’ to Expand to More Theaters

“The Undefeated,” the Sarah Palin biopic that premiered last weekend to 10 screens across the country, will be expanding to a handful of extra theaters in selected markets . Starting Friday, the movie will show in 14 theaters: “Ahwatukee 24 4915 East Ray Road Phoenix, AZ 85044 Arizona Center 24 565 N. 3rd Street Phoenix, AZ 85004 Barrett Commons 24 Theatres 2600 Cobb Place Lane NW Kennesaw, GA 30144 Block 30 @ Orange 20 City Boulevard West Orange, CA 92868 Colonial 18 Theatres 825 Lawrenceville – Suwanee Road Lawrenceville, GA 30245 Concord Mills 8421 Concord Mills Boulevard, Concord, NC 28027 Foothills 15 7401 La Cholla Blvd. Suite 144 Tucson, AZ 85741 Grapevine Mills 30 Theatres 3150 Grapevine Mills Parkway Grapevine, TX 76051 Highlands Ranch 24 103 Centennial Road Highlands Ranch, CO 80126 Indian River 24 6200 20th Street #600 Vero Beach, FL 32966 Mayfair Mall 18 2500 North Mayfair Road Box M-146 Wauwatosa, WI 53226 Ontario Mills 30 4549 Mills Circle Ontario, CA 91764 West Oaks 14 9415 West Colonial Drive Ocoee, FL 34761 Willowbrook 24 Theatres 17145 Tomball Parkway Houston, TX 77064″ Even though “Undefeated” did respectable numbers at the 10 screens it showed in over the weekend, exceeding 10,000 tickets in Orange County, Calif., and Phoenix, this does not represent a huge expansion. One explanation may be that there is a shortage of screens available with several summer blockbusters showing, including the new Harry Potter film. It also might be a marketing strategy to slowly expand the scope of the release of “The Undefeated” rather than suddenly show it on a 1,000 or so screens and risk a big drop off of the audience, especially in blue state markets. It is unclear whether the movie will eventually get a wide release, though there may be some opportunities once the heavy blockbuster season drops off in August. “The Undefeated” has not gotten good reviews in the mainstream media. This is not surprising, as the film constitutes an argument for Sarah Palin as a leader and a potential president of the United States. Most mainstream film reviewers tend to be on the liberal side of the political equation and are therefore not sympathetic to the arguments advanced in the film. Palin is such a polarizing figure for many on the left that doubtless they cannot set aside their disdain for her and her politics and concentrate on the film’s cinematic qualities. It also seems that ARC Entertainment, which has produced and distributed “The Undefeated,” intends to make most of its money, and thus create most of the influence the movie is supposed to create, through DVD sales, streaming video, and cable on demand. If Palin runs for president, sales of DVDs at campaign rallies and through websites could be very substantial. That it would also spread the Palin message would be another, from the point of view of Palin and the film’s producer, happy effect.
