Environmental Issue

Friday, den 29. March 2013

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) Gail Collins has a terrific piece in how the GOP used to be concerned about the environment, but now, not so much. The whole column, “ Cooling on Warming ,” is worth reading, but one thing in particular caught my eye: … earlier this month, a deeply noncontroversial Senate resolution commemorating International Women’s Day had to be taken back and edited because someone objected to a paragraph — which had been in an almost identical version passed in the last Congress — stating that women in developing countries “are disproportionately affected by changes in climate because of their need to secure water, food and fuel for their livelihood.” You may be wondering who the objecting senator was.

The New York Times announced late Friday that it will discontinue its Green blog, less than two months after dismantling its environment desk. The paper insists that despite these changes it will “forge ahead with our aggressive reporting on environmental and energy topics,” but coverage of crucial environmental stories is likely to suffer. When The Times closed its environment desk in January, many expressed concerns that the quality and quantity of the paper’s environmental coverage would be compromised

CNN founder Ted Turner  said  in 2011 that climate change is “probably the most serious … problem that humanity has ever faced,” adding that we need to “increase the amount of the debate” to motivate people to take action. Unfortunately, the network he created has often failed to live up to that goal, devoting  minimal time  to the issue even while  reporting  on its  consequences

The Wisconsin State Journal failed to note specific health and environmental risks associated with taconite mining — such as increased levels of mesothelioma among miners and groundwater contamination — in an editorial and news story on a mining reform bill that conservative members of the legislature have made a priority for 2013. What Is Taconite Mining

An analysis by the Checks & Balances Project finds that 60 major newspapers frequently quote fossil fuel-funded think tanks on energy and environmental issues without disclosing their industry ties. Further research by Media Matters finds that the Wall Street Journal ‘s lack of disclosure has been especially glaring.

by Bill Becker The Obama and Romney campaigns are making the point that there are big differences between the positions of the two presidential candidates, and America has a clear choice between two futures. There are no issues on which those statements are truer than energy policy and its impact on global climate change.  The candidates haven’t said much about climate change so far.  They should be forced to talk about it in one of the upcoming presidential debates, preferably the first of the three mano a mano face-offs on Oct. 3 in Denver

by Amanda Peterson, via Climate Access School is back in session for high schools all across the country and the one thing on every student’s mind is, of course, climate change. OK, maybe in most schools who’s dating whom, getting into college and the elections are getting a bit more play.  But as we, the Alliance for Climate Education (ACE), start back up, we’re getting climate change to top of mind, too. Since 2009, we’ve been working with high schoolers – with an assembly, student action programs and leadership trainings – in climate science and solutions

by Kristin Hyde via Climate Access At a gathering of ranchers in Kansas City last weekend, every meeting and meal was opened with a prayer, including a plea for rain to end this devastating drought.  Drought-caused price spikes for feed are forcing many livestock producers to slaughter their herds to a level they can afford to feed.  You won’t often see a direct link in these stories to climate change, and you are even less likely to hear such a link made by the farmers and ranchers themselves.   The key is to understand farmers’ perspectives, be strategic about effective engagement and find common ground.

Let’s not mince words — we’re on thin ice. And it’s getting rapidly thinner.
