Dr. Benjamin Carson, who skyrocketed to conservative fame after criticizing President Obama at the National Prayer Breakfast in February, has stated that he’s open to exploring a career in television after he retires from medicine. Carson has received a helping hand from Fox News, which has hosted Carson at least 17 times since his February speech. In a March 24  Washington Post   profile , Carson explained that the likelihood of him running for president – which has been  trumpeted  by conservative media outlets – is “incredibly small,” but that he is much more interested in hosting a TV show: After a several-day onslaught from fans and the media, many wanting to know his potential political plans, Carson has eased away from suggestions he may have his eyes on the White House

Fox News is suggesting that scientists were “wrong” about global warming by using misleading graphics to obscure the long-term global temperature rise. On his Fox News show, Neil Cavuto suggested that the recent cold weather invalidates concerns about global warming, asking weather forecaster and climate misinformer Joe Bastardi , “How did we get this so wrong?” Cavuto aired a graphic which at first glance appears to show that temperatures are dramatically cooler now than they were last March

Esquire ‘s Charles P. Pierce has criticized Breitbart.com for reporting the specific location where President Obama’s teenage daughters are vacationing for spring break, warning that such actions by the “‘rightwing entertainment complex’ are going to get someone killed.” On Monday, Breitbart.com’s Matthew Boyle published the location and the name of the resort where the Obama daughters are staying for spring break, ignoring the long-standing journalistic tradition that media outlets should not report on a president’s minor children when they are not attending “official and semi-official events.” Pierce responded to Breitbart.com in a blog post, arguing that there was “no possible news value” to the report other than to incite readers and that “[s]ooner or later” the “‘rightwing entertainment complex’ are going to get someone killed”: What possible interest does this serve, except to titillate the dark and envious nether parts of Boyle’s 22 readers?

As advocates prepare for oral arguments in the challenge to California’s Proposition 8 and the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), the right-wing media, typified by The Wall Street Journal , is wrongly pushing the idea that ruling in favor of same-sex couples would lead to the problems they claim resulted from the Court’s Roe v. “There are very strong indications that the current rate of species extinctions far exceeds anything in the fossil record.” That’s from a 2010 special issue on climate change and biodiversity from the UK’s Royal Society. In 2011, a  Nature Geoscience study found humans are spewing carbon into the atmosphere 10 times faster now than 56 million years ago, the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), a time of 10°F warming and mass extinction. An even more ancient extinction is the subject of a new study in Science (subs.

By Morriah Kaplan Following the hottest year on record — one that recorded over 3,000 monthly records for heat, rain, and snow — the public is starting to agree that climate change might, in fact, be real. Though we all have a stake in an issue that will continue to cause extreme weather events, escalate costs and damages, and pose a grave public health threat, one community in particular is taking notice: Latinos. On Wednesday, House Representative Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) hosted Adrianna Quintero from Voces Verdes , and Dan Lashof from the National Resources Defense Council , to discuss the effects of climate change, particularly for the Latino community.

By Kiley Kroh After a year full of mishaps and failures in its quest to drill for oil off the coast of Alaska, Royal Dutch Shell announced today that it would not pursue exploratory drilling activity in the Arctic Ocean this year.  The decision comes as the Obama administration nears the end of its high-level, 60-day review of Shell’s troubled Arctic drilling program, which was announced on January 8. Last year was fraught with problems for Shell as the company attempted the first Arctic offshore exploratory drilling activity in decades. Technical failures, permit violations, struggles with the harsh and unpredictable Arctic conditions, and warnings from a wide range of voices all combined to discredit the company’s claims that such operations could be carried out safely and responsibly

A U-T San Diego editorial claims that opposing the Keystone XL pipeline is “daft” because if President Obama were to block the construction of the pipeline, Canada would easily construct an alternate pipeline through British Columbia to export to China, ignoring that such a plan faces significant opposition. The February 19 editorial claims that “If the president rejects the [Keystone XL] project, Canada will instead construct a pipeline from Alberta to the British Columbia coast, where it will build refineries and eventually ship most of the refined bitumen to Asia — primarily fast-growing China.” But the route to British Columbia faces significant opposition in Canada. First Nation tribes have rejected the Northern Gateway pipeline project, which would transport tar sands oil from Alberta to British Columbia since 2006

A widely discredited rumor about Secretary of Defense nominee Chuck Hagel could cause headaches for Lou Dobbs, who endorsed that rumor on his Fox Business show. New York Daily News  reporter Dan Friedman  wrote  on Wednesday that he was the unintentional source of a rumor that Hagel had received funding from a terrorist-friendly group called “Friends of Hamas.”  That rumor was spread in right-wing media circles by Breitbart.com’s Ben Shapiro, who carelessly reported  earlier this month that Hagel was paid to speak to a group called “Friends of Hamas.” But, as detailed by Slate’s Dave Weigel and by the  New York Daily News , that organization does not actually  exist .

The major media continue to sow confusion on one of the central questions of our time: How much warming will we subject our children and countless future generations to? The answer to that question depends primarily on four factors: The so-called “equilibrium climate sensitivity” – the sensitivity of the climate to fast feedbacks like sea ice and water vapor. The ECS is how much warming you get if we suddenly adopt a super-aggressive effort to cut carbon pollution and only double CO2 emissions to 560 ppm — and there are no major “slow” feedbacks.  We know the fast feedbacks, like water vapor, are strong by themselves (see  Study : Water-vapor feedback is “strong and positive,” so we face “warming of several degrees Celsius” and Skeptical Science piece here).

This is the SodaStream commercial CBS banned from airing during the Superbowl: Sodastream is a home carbonation system that touts itself as “Earth Friendly”: SodaStream is an “Active Green” solution that minimizes the huge eco-footprint caused by the manufacture, transport and waste of plastic bottles. SodaStream says its “vision is to create a  world free from bottles .” They claim that ”since January 2009, we have saved the world from over  1 billion plastic bottles .” Now it is is hard to see why CBS banned that ad gently ribbing the competition (albeit two Superbowl sponsors) — especially since last year NBC ran this ad by Chevy that (humorously) suggests you won’t survive the Mayan apocalypse if you drive a Ford truck [insert line here about trucks and the real apocalypse that's coming]. You shouldn’t shed a tear for SodaStream, however, since they will reportedly be airing a different commercial — and this ban has been a marketer’s dream , with the above ad being viewed more than 2.5 million times this week already.
