CNN’s Dana Loesch excused Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-MO) inflammatory remarks that it’s “really rare” for women subjected to “legitimate rape” to become pregnant. In a series of posts on her Twitter account, Loesch dismissed those comments, writing that “Akin was trying to fit medical explanation into a soundbite,” and that he “failed a soundbite.”  As Talking Points Memo reported today, during an interview with a local Missouri TV station, Akin responded to a question about whether he thought abortion should be legal in cases of rape by saying :  AKIN: First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare.

It’s all fun and games until somebody loses their Medicare. Mitt Romney can’t send Paul Ryan to Florida because of his radical Medicare plan, but when Democrats have a chance to remind voters about the plan, Romney won’t be able to use Ryan anywhere. Here are a few blasts from the polling past, when the Ryan plan to end Medicare was in the news

ACORN’s Texas chapter may have changed its name but it still appears to be involved in the same kinds of financial shenanigans that made the radical group synonymous with corruption and sleaze. President Obama used to …

Yes, I’m aware that one extremely rich white guy made the oh-so-brave and surprising choice of selecting as his special best friend the one guy most dedicated to rewarding extremely rich white guys. Shocking. And yet, there are things that are far more important.

NY Times on the veepstakes: The extended summertime silence of Mr. Romney, the Republican candidate, on his choice of a running mate has provided a new opening for social and economic conservatives to lobby for a die-hard member of their movement to join the Republican ticket. If Romney folds and picks Paul Ryan, he would have to be considered gutless as well as heartless.

Digby : This is why we have Simpson and Bowles and David Walker and Alice Rivlin and every other fiscal scold in the country is running all over Capitol Hill rending their garments that the congress simply must repeal this horrible “sequester” — and replace it with a more “balanced approach.” Like Simpson-Bowles. The con is this: they are all acting as if the deficit targets are carved in stone and cannot be changed only the way to get there. And the Democrats are right there selling the same snake oil.
