A group of gun activists armed with AR-15s and handguns held a rally at the Tippecanoe County Courthouse in Indiana on Saturday to thank Congress for voting down gun safety measures, including a proposal to expand background checks for guns sales. Indiana Moms Against Gun Control organized the event as a counter protest to Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense’s protest calling for stricter federal gun laws in the aftermath of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Pictures from JCOnline.com : The armed group had previously crashed a gun safety protest in March and insisted that they had a right to carry the loaded weapons on the streets.

Photo: The Denver Post Post-Newtown, sales for bulletproof backpacks and whiteboards have soared as parents and school districts seek to take children’s safety into their own hands. The reaction is along the lines of what the National Rifle Association has promoted for months: that armed guards, and not gun regulation, is the answer to school shootings. Congress responded to parents’ concern by caving to pressure from the NRA and blocking the only serious federal attempt to pass gun safety legislation earlier this month.

Long lines to vote in Florida for the 2012 election Though Republican election officials in battleground states sought to dampen voter turn out of traditionally Democratic voters through by instituting identification requirements and limiting early voting hours, a new analysis of census data by the Associated Press shows that African Americans “voted at a higher rate than other minority groups in 2012 and by most measures surpassed the white turnout for the first time.” The analysis finds that had “people voted last November at the same rates they did in 2004, when black turnout was below its current historic levels, Republican Mitt Romney would have won narrowly”: The 2012 data suggest Romney was a particularly weak GOP candidate, unable to motivate white voters let alone attract significant black or Latino support . Obama’s personal appeal and the slowly improving economy helped overcome doubts and spur record levels of minority voters in a way that may not be easily replicated for Democrats soon

In a campus-wide email sent out on Friday, Dartmouth College’s Board of Trustees Chair Steve Mandel appeared to equate the actions of sexual assault protesters with the subsequent death and rape threats made against them by several other Dartmouth students on anonymous online forums and message boards. The threats materialized after students who allege that they have personally encountered sexual assault, homophobia, and racism on campus protested the Dartmouth administration’s inability to foster a safer environment during a prospective students’ event on April 19th.

In a speech that steered clear of policy proscriptions, but that urged a need for creative thinking about copyright and content distribution, former President Bill Clinton on Friday called for further discussion “about the need to give people an appropriate return on their ideas and development of them, and presentation of it, in film and music and in other areas, and the need to give it as quickly as possible to the world.” Clinton’s speech came at the Creativity Conference, a half-day meeting hosted by the Motion Picture Association of America, Microsoft, and Time Magazine, where participants ranging from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to HBO CEO Richard Plepler discussed issues in the creative economy ranging from federal research and development investment to copyright.

A group of over 100 doctors who specialize in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) published a detailed editorial in the medical journal Blood on Friday that slams pharmaceutical companies for jacking up cancer medication prices to unaffordable degrees. The open letter also calls for immediate reform to help patients access drugs that mean the difference between life and death for millions of Americans. The doctors argue that, despite the creativity and innovation involved in creating cancer drugs, pharmaceutical companies still charge far more than they are objectively worth, knowing that patients have no other choice than to pay the prices they dictate.

Earlier this month Gov. Nathan Deal (R-GA) called a request for him to support integrating a still-segregated school prom in Wilcox County, Georgia a “ silly publicity stunt ,” and he later labeled the segregated prom quesiton a “ private issue [], and not something that the state government needs to have its finger involved in.” Perhaps he would feel differently if he surrounded himself with more diverse appointments
