Evening news coverage throughout April touched upon several economic issues, including income inequality, deficit reduction, and entitlement cuts. A Media Matters analysis of this coverage reveals that many of these segments lacked proper context or necessary input from economists, while some networks ignored certain issues entirely.

Media outlets are reporting that a new immigration report from the conservative Heritage Foundation found that passing the proposed Senate comprehensive immigration bill will cost $6.3 trillion. In fact, the Heritage report is not an analysis of the entire Senate’s ”Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act,” and does not take into account costs or savings of the proposal’s broader reforms. Media Report That Heritage Study Found Senate Immigration Proposal Will Cost Trillions  Fox News: “Comprehensive Immigration Overhaul Being Taken Up In The Senate This Week Could Cost Taxpayers $6.3 trillion.”  In an article on a Heritage immigration study headlined, “Study pegs cost of immigration bill’s mass legalization at $6.3 trillion,” Fox News claimed that the “comprehensive immigration overhaul being taken up in the Senate this week could cost taxpayers $6.3 trillion if 11 million illegal immigrants are granted legal status, according to a long-awaited estimate by the conservative Heritage Foundation.” [FoxNews.com,  5/6/13 ]  Wash.

According to Fox News Sunday ‘s Chris Wallace, the conservative Heritage Foundation is set to release a report that claims immigration reform will cost taxpayers billions of dollars. But Heritage’s analysis is reportedly based on a 2007 study that was widely discredited by experts for its faulty methodology and dubious conclusions. On KFTK’s Allman in the Morning , Wallace stated that he plans to host Heritage Foundation president and former Republican Sen

Fox News ignored economic history to forward the absurd claim that former President George W. Bush exercised “fiscal discipline.” On the April 25 edition of Fox & Friends , former Bush White House Chief of Staff Andy Card claimed that President Bush “probably has the best track record of any modern president in terms of fiscal discipline,” a statement that went unchallenged by the Fox & Friends co-hosts: But facts undermine Card’s claim. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the drivers of current and future public debt are policies from the Bush presidency: A recent study from Harvard researcher Linda J

According to a new Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine study , doctors who know the cost of the medical tests and procedures that they perform tend to choose to do fewer of them then those who don’t. That ends up sparing patients from unnecessary testing and preventing Medicare from paying unnecessary reimbursements.

President Obama will today release a sweeping budget proposal that is aimed at reaching a grand bargain with House and Senate Republicans on the nation’s long-term debt and deficits. The budget, as expected from reports last week, largely mirrors the compromise offer Obama made to Republican leaders during fiscal cliff negotiations at the beginning of the year, as it seeks investments aimed at spurring economic growth and new revenues in exchange for cuts to both domestic discretionary spending and entitlement programs. The Obama budget replaces the automatic budget cuts — sequestration — that went into effect on March 1 with a total of $1.8 trillion in deficit reduction achieved through a mix of spending cuts and revenue increases, and it also includes many of the administration’s priorities, including stimulative investments, funding for a universal preschool program, and an increase in the minimum wage to $9.00 per hour

By a vote of 221-207, Republicans passed Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) budget for the third consecutive year. The House Republican budget slashes funding for poverty programs and dramatically transforms Medicare for seniors, all while it grants tax breaks to special interests like Big Oil

Investor services and credit rating agency Moody’s has some news for GOP governors hesitant to expand their state Medicaid programs under Obamacare: either hospitals in states refusing the expansion, or the states themselves, will feel pressure on their credit ratings due to higher uncompensated care costs and cash-strapped budgets. In a press release regarding a new Moody’s report on Medicaid expansion, the agency explains that refusing the expansion would by necessity force one of these institutions or the other to lose out — since the resulting increase in the ranks of uninsured, low-income Americans would put fiscal strains on safety net hospitals or the state at large.

The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) bills itself as an event convened to “crystallize the best of the conservative thought in America” that will showcase “all of the leading conservative organizations and speakers.” Media covering CPAC 2013 should know that the conference’s speakers, from the most prominent to the lesser-known, have a history of launching smears, pushing conspiracy theories, and hyping myths about the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate.
