Fox News contributor and National Review columnist John Fund fabricated a link between voter suppression and IRS employees inappropriately singling out tea party and conservative groups’ applications for tax-exempt status, claiming that such scrutiny by the IRS is the “real” form of voter suppression.

As of this writing, there is no indication that the IRS’s inappropriate targeting of conservative political groups has any connection whatsoever to the White House. And some conservative talking heads are even acknowledging as much. But they’re not letting that stop them from naming Barack Obama as the culpable party, arguing that the president is responsible due to his preternatural ability to bend the average bureaucrat to his maleficent will from afar.

Fox News ignored President Obama’s explicit demand for accountability in the wake of news that the Internal Revenue Service applied extra scrutiny to conservative groups. The network’s omission gave it cover to accuse Obama of not taking the IRS’s actions seriously and to call for a special prosecutor. Obama first addressed the IRS controversy during a May 13 joint  press conference  with British Prime Minister David Cameron, where he condemned the IRS’s behavior with the caveat, “If, in fact, IRS personnel engaged in the kind of practices that had been reported,” then “that’s outrageous and there’s no place for it.

A Media Matters analysis of this coverage reveals that many of these segments lacked proper context or necessary input from economists, while some networks ignored certain issues entirely.

Fox News devoted significantly more airtime to the Heritage Foundation’s claims that providing legal status to undocumented immigrants will have negative fiscal impact, but mostly ignored pro-immigration rallies during the same period. Fox News Spent More Than 25 Minutes Promoting Heritage’s Flawed Immigration Claims Fox News Covered The Heritage Immigration Claims For 25 Minutes, Only Covered Pro-Immigration Rallies For One Minute And A Half.  Fox News covered the Heritage Foundation’s immigration claims for 25 minutes and six seconds which included coverage of their flawed study, but only covered two immigration rallies for one minute and 30 seconds in the period between April 1 and May 6, 2013.

According to the Washington Post , the Cato Institute has identified another major flaw with the conservative Heritage Foundation’s immigration report that further invalidates Heritage’s conclusions: Heritage has repeatedly touted the use of “dynamic” scoring, as opposed to the “static” scoring used in its immigration studies, as the more accurate model for gauging fiscal impact. As Cato Institute immigration expert Alex Nowrasteh explained , estimating a proposed bill’s fiscal impact using dynamic scoring involves taking into account how legislation “will affect the rest of the economy, also changing tax revenue and government spending.” He added: “Since increased immigration will increase the size of the economy, it will also increase tax revenue and some government spending.” As Nowrasteh went on to note, however, Heritage used “static” scoring to analyze immigration reform in 2007 — which assumed the bill would not affect the rest of the economy.
