Few news outlets are more sympathetic to the financial services industry than the Wall Street Journal . So it’s interesting when the paper reports from London that “antibanking sentiment here is still off the charts,” leaving the industry “gun shy about flaunting wealth.” That was also true at the Olympics, even though “The games are typically one of the biggest corporate schmoozefests on the calendar.” This is part of what the Journal calls “a wave of banker austerity,” with executives skipping the usual “hired black sedan” and champagne, and even resorting to putting up important clients in mere three- or four-star hotels.

On that day, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson broke the news to congressional leaders that they would have to approve a bailout to avert a complete meltdown of the financial system

“The reason I got involved in public service, by and large, if I had to credit one thinker, one person,  it would be Ayn Rand .” That’s freshly minted GOP vice-presidential candidate Paul Ryan talking — statements he would eventually  recant – at a party celebrating what would have been the prolific author’s 100th birthday,  Rand’s books are a big driver in the long-term right-wing campaign to delude millions of people into believing that there’s no such thing as society — that everyone must look out only for themselves. Lately, Rand’s work has enjoyed a major revival of interest.

Two years later, the Democratic group Organizing for America , formed to keep mobilizing the president’s supporters after Obama was elected, released a mobile app that was in some ways a prototype of Obama’s new app.
