Fox News glossed over an important aspect in its reporting on lower than expected GDP growth — the government contribution to GDP has been negative in the majority of recent reports.

The ties between conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and right-wing megaphone Matt Drudge remain strong, with Jones revealing that he spent time yesterday with one of Drudge’s employees and crediting Drudge with pushing one of his conspiracy theories ”into the mainstream media.” Matt Drudge, who has  described  2013 as the “year of Alex Jones,”  promoted  Jones’ website, Infowars, 244 times over the last two years and 50 times since the year began on The Drudge Report. Conservatives have urged Drudge to stop linking to Jones after the latter suggested the Boston Marathon bombings were a “false flag” attack perpetrated by the federal government. On his radio show today, Jones said he was “hanging out” with The Drudge Report’s Joseph Curl at a hotel in Houston, Texas where the pair tried “to crash the private Bush-Cheney party” being held in concert with the dedication ceremony for President George W. Bush’s presidential library.

Matt Drudge has long been conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ biggest ally. According to a  Media Matters  review, the heavily-trafficked Drudge Report has promoted at least 50 separate articles at Jones’ Infowars website in 2013, and has linked to at least 244 different articles on the site in the past two years.  Drudge  announced  this week that he had privately told friends that 2013 would be the “year of Alex Jones.” Considering Drudge’s penchant for promoting Jones and his Infowars website, those comments are more of a promise than a prediction. Alex Jones is a radio host  famous  for pushing absurd conspiracy theories about a host of issues, including that the U.S

Glenn Kessler of The Washington Post’s Fact Checker blog further discredited “absurd” claims by congressional Republicans, pushed by Fox News, that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton personally approved a reduction in security at a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, that was attacked on September 11, 2012. Fox News has spent days promoting a GOP attack on Clinton based on a partisan House report released April 23 that claims Secretary Clinton had seen and denied requests for more security at the Benghazi facility.

Fox News ignored economic history to forward the absurd claim that former President George W. Bush exercised “fiscal discipline.” On the April 25 edition of Fox & Friends , former Bush White House Chief of Staff Andy Card claimed that President Bush “probably has the best track record of any modern president in terms of fiscal discipline,” a statement that went unchallenged by the Fox & Friends co-hosts: But facts undermine Card’s claim. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the drivers of current and future public debt are policies from the Bush presidency: A recent study from Harvard researcher Linda J

Fox News is leading the right-wing media chorus baselessly claiming Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the apparent bomber in the Boston Marathon attacks, should be indefinitely detained as an “enemy combatant,” even though legal experts maintain it is unlikely he qualifies for this designation. Militarily detaining U.S. citizens apprehended in this country as “enemy combatants” for acts of terror is extremely rare and constitutionally questionable

Conservative media focused their Earth Day coverage on the crime and trial of environmental activist Ira Einhorn — convicted of murdering his girlfriend — while pushing the unsubstantiated smear that he founded the holiday. Sensationalizing Einhorn’s murder conviction distracted from the holiday’s purpose and the true founder of Earth Day — former Wisconsin governor and United States senator Gaylord Nelson (D), a passionate environmental advocate who was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award for his work. Celebrated on April 22, 1970, the original Earth Day marked the  beginning  of the environmental movement and, as CBS noted,  came  ”at a time when pollution was rampant and regulation was not commonplace.” The popular support Earth Day helped engender led to the establishment of the U.S.

Days after the 1996 Olympic Park bombing, media and federal investigators focused on their top suspect: Richard Jewell , the security guard who had first discovered the bomb which killed one and injured 111. It took more than a year for Jewell to clear his name; he would successfully sue several outets for their coverage but remained haunted by the memory of the reporters who went after him “like piranha on a bleeding cow” for years. In the 24 hours following yesterday’s tragic bombings at the Boston Marathon, several right-wing media figures have attempted to create their own Jewell. Echoing the same piranha-like voraciousness seen in that case, they have published the name, home address, and what they claim are Facebook pictures of a 20-year-old Saudi national that police have since identified as a witness — not a suspect — to the Boston bombings

During a tease for  Fox & Friends Saturday , Fox News hosts Alisyn Camerota and Clayton Morris perpetuated mischaracterizations of a Phoenix, AZ program designed to diversify the lifeguard ranks at city pools. Camerota falsely claimed that Phoenix would be hiring minority applicants as lifeguards, “even though they cannot swim” because the city must “meet quotas for diversity.” Camerota was echoing discredited myths about a lifeguard diversity program that right-wing websites like Fox Nation, Glenn Beck’s The Blaze, and National Review Online have peddled in recent days. There is no evidence that a quota system is being used.

Fox News used a dishonest graph to distort the Obama administration’s record on border enforcement and claim that the border is less secure. Fox’s chart painted a misleading picture of Southwest border apprehensions by using an arbitrary time period and an improper scale — even as illegal border crossings under President Obama are at historic lows. In several segments on Fox News, correspondent William La Jeunesse highlighted the graph to claim that the Southwest border “is actually less secure,” pointing to what he called the “double-digit surge” in border apprehensions from 2011 to 2013 to make his point: La Jeunesse reported that the numbers for October-April 2013 were released exclusively to Fox News from U.S.

Fox News hyped a dubious story by Townhall news editor Katie Pavlich to stoke fears that a surge of immigrants has made the border less safe. Pavlich, a Fox News contributor , published a story using anecdotal remarks from an unnamed Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agent and CBP internal data to claim that non-citizens are attempting to cross the southern border in large numbers: As the immigration reform Gang of Eight inside the Beltway prepares to announce a deal later this week, claiming border security will come before a path to citizenship for millions of illegals, Border Patrol agents have seen illegal border crossings double and warn the cutting of agent work hours will only result in less border security, not more. “We’ve seen the number of illegal aliens double, maybe even triple since amnesty talk started happening,” an agent told Townhall, who asked to remain unnamed due to fears of retaliation within Customs and Border Protection [CBP], something he said is common.

Add Commentary’s John Podhoretz to the growing list of conservative writers who, in the wake of Obama’s easy re-election win, are voicing concern about the Republican Party’s approach and are worried that players within the conservative movement are damaging its chances to effectively counter the Democratic president. But also add John Podhoretz to the list of conservatives who refuse to type the phrase “Fox News” when detailing who’s  to blame for the GOP’s tarnished reputation. This has become something of a conservative formula in recent months: Bemoan the state of the GOP, denounce its messaging failures, and urge introspection and the courage to change course

Esquire ‘s Charles P. Pierce has criticized Breitbart.com for reporting the specific location where President Obama’s teenage daughters are vacationing for spring break, warning that such actions by the “‘rightwing entertainment complex’ are going to get someone killed.” On Monday, Breitbart.com’s Matthew Boyle published the location and the name of the resort where the Obama daughters are staying for spring break, ignoring the long-standing journalistic tradition that media outlets should not report on a president’s minor children when they are not attending “official and semi-official events.” Pierce responded to Breitbart.com in a blog post, arguing that there was “no possible news value” to the report other than to incite readers and that “[s]ooner or later” the “‘rightwing entertainment complex’ are going to get someone killed”: What possible interest does this serve, except to titillate the dark and envious nether parts of Boyle’s 22 readers?
