Fox News ignored President Obama’s explicit demand for accountability in the wake of news that the Internal Revenue Service applied extra scrutiny to conservative groups. The network’s omission gave it cover to accuse Obama of not taking the IRS’s actions seriously and to call for a special prosecutor. Obama first addressed the IRS controversy during a May 13 joint  press conference  with British Prime Minister David Cameron, where he condemned the IRS’s behavior with the caveat, “If, in fact, IRS personnel engaged in the kind of practices that had been reported,” then “that’s outrageous and there’s no place for it.

Reuters is purporting to examine how scientists are “struggling” to reconcile short-term temperature variation with long-term climate change, but fails to quote any scientists about the issue. A U-T San Diego editorial claims that opposing the Keystone XL pipeline is “daft” because if President Obama were to block the construction of the pipeline, Canada would easily construct an alternate pipeline through British Columbia to export to China, ignoring that such a plan faces significant opposition. The February 19 editorial claims that “If the president rejects the [Keystone XL] project, Canada will instead construct a pipeline from Alberta to the British Columbia coast, where it will build refineries and eventually ship most of the refined bitumen to Asia — primarily fast-growing China.” But the route to British Columbia faces significant opposition in Canada. First Nation tribes have rejected the Northern Gateway pipeline project, which would transport tar sands oil from Alberta to British Columbia since 2006

Starbucks has faced scrutiny for what UK lawmakers call “outrageous” and “immoral” tax dodging, along with Amazon and Google. Starbucks’ average tax rate on overseas income is just 13 percent , and it has paid the UK just $13.8 million in the last 14 years. On Thursday, Starbucks promised to pay $16 million more to the UK over the next two years, after coming under fire for its complicated use of tax deductions and inter-company payments: “ Today, I am announcing changes which will result in Starbucks paying higher corporation tax in the UK — above what is currently required by law ,” [Managing Director Of Starbucks UK Kris] Engskov said in the speech to the London Chamber of Commerce “In addition, we are making a commitment that we will propose to pay a significant amount of corporation tax during 2013 and 2014 regardless of whether our company is profitable during these years,” Engskov said.

I’ve been a little worried that Iron Man 3 was going to repeat the cycle of Tony Stark being an entitled, self-regarding rich bro before rising to the occasion that’s become the character’s signature arc, but this trailer has my mind at ease: If you’re going to have a giant, years-long story, continuity should be a benefit of The Avengers franchise, rather than a hindrance.
