As Midwestern states assess the damage wrought by record flooding in recent weeks, scientists tell Media Matters that the media has missed an important part of the story: the impact of climate change. A Media Matters analysis finds that less than 3 percent of television and print coverage of the flooding mentioned climate change, which has increased the frequency of large rain storms and exacerbated flood risks

Last week’s radical federal appeals court ruling that called into question hundreds of presidential recess appointments made over the last 150 years is already taking a toll. While the decision finding unconstitutional President Obama’s appointment last January of three members to the National Labor Relations Board invalidated just one particular NLRB decision, a hospital chain declared this week that the ruling exempts them from all NLRB rulings over the last year, and is refusing to comply with rulings that require them to collect dues from union members, according to a Reuters exclusive : Prime Healthcare was not a party in the cases involving union dues and internal investigations

Townhall news editor Katie Pavlich makes a facile comparison between “two gun cultures” in America and claims that gun violence is largely limited to urban areas. However, high levels of gun death exist throughout America, and many of the states with the highest rates of gun death are rural states with weak gun laws. In one gun culture, Pavlich claims firearms are used “to celebrate American history, for collection, personal protection, hunting and sport” while the other gun culture “can be found in the inner city of Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City, Los Angeles and others.” In publishing today’s  column , Pavlich joined a  growing   chorus  of conservatives in media scrambling to deny the link between firearm availability and gun violence in the wake of the murder-suicide involving NFL player Jovan Belcher.

Reuters is running the headline: “More US coal plants to retire due to green rules-study.” But the group that authored the study says the additional expected retirements are “Due To Low Natural Gas Prices,” not Environmental Protection Agency rules. Economists at the Brattle Group project in a new report that “59 GW to 77 GW (for lenient versus strict [regulatory] scenarios, respectively) of coal plant capacity are likely to retire” by 2016 — more than previously forecast

Three panelists who appeared with President Barack Obama at the 1998 conference where he mentioned “redistribution” agree that his comments were wrongly taken out of context by the conservative press and some mainstream media outlets. The panelists at the Loyola University event also recall then-state senator Obama discussing funding of education and other social through foundations and public funds.  “Shame on them,” said Maureen Hellwig, who was a program coordinator for the Policy Research Action Group, a consortium of non-profit community organizations, when she appeared on the panel.

This afternoon, Mother Jones ‘ David Corn reported on a video of Mitt Romney taken surreptitiously at a campaign fundraiser in which the Republican presidential candidate tells donors that “there are 47 percent who are with [President Obama], who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims,” and that “my job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.” Romney explained that he has to “convince the five to ten percent in the center that are independents” to vote for him to get him just over the electoral hump.
