Media outlets including NPR and Fox News are targeting federal disability benefits programs through a campaign deceptively portraying these programs as wasteful and unsustainable. In reality, these programs have low fraud rates and help the rising number of Americans with severe disabilities survive when they are   unable to work. The argument by conservative media that former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and other survivors of gun violence who supported a  failed Senate compromise to expand background checks on firearms sales are “props” of the Obama administration is both hypocritically partisan and logically flawed. Right-wing media are unable to acknowledge that President Obama’s gun violence prevention agenda mirrors the priorities of gun violence survivors, who are not mere “props,” to pass stronger gun laws.

Fox News and National Review Online gave credence to claims about immigrant’s use of social benefits by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) without noting that immigrants are less likely than native-born Americans to rely on such programs. The New York Times recently reported that rates of ADHD diagnosis among school-aged children has risen to 11 percent — a record high. That number is partially a consequence of more accurate ADHD diagnoses — but it presents a stark choice for parents debating the best treatment options for their kids. During an appearance on Meet the Press Sunday morning, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) reiterated his new found openness to providing a pathway to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants who were brought into this country as children. When host David Gregory asked Cantor point blank whether or not he supported the DREAM Act — which “would offer a pathway to citizenship for undocumented young people who attend college or serve in the military” — Cantor avoided giving a direct answer.

CNN host Erin Burnett and reporter Deb Feyerick gave serious treatment to National Rifle Association board member Ted Nugent’s baseless claim that President Obama will attempt to confiscate firearms, even discussing what would happen if the government tried to “take all the guns away tomorrow.” Significantly, none of the proposals  to reduce gun violence supported by the Obama administration in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut elementary school massacre involve firearm confiscation. Even though Nugent, who in part blamed the Newtown massacre on an “embarrassing, politically correct culture,” is not a credible figure in the gun policy debate, Feyerick repeated his wild-eyed conspiracy theories on Erin Burnett OutFront : BURNETT: President Obama has said he doesn’t have any intention of confiscating guns, that that is not his goal, he’s not trying to attack the Second Amendment.
