On a conference call with medical professionals on Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reviewed procedures for dealing with the H7N9 bird flu virus and urged American hospitals to be on the lookout for patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms who might have come into contact with the virus recently. Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who spent as much as $150 million on independent expenditures to bolster Republicans in the 2012 election, has informed the Securities and Exchange Commission that his Las Vegas Sands Corporation “ likely violated a federal law against bribing foreign officials.” “[T]here were likely violations of the books and records and internal controls provisions” of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the company said in its annual regulatory report published on Friday. Late last year, Adelson reportedly held meetings with at least one House GOP leader to discuss “possible changes to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act,” arguing that he had been the target of federal investigations under the Act as retribution for his strong support for Republican candidates. The Las Vegas Sands Corporation is suspected of improperly and in some cases illegally bribing Chinese government officials to expand its business in China.

[ *Technically, Obama said he was “surprised [global warming] didn’t come up in one of the debates,” but he is the friggin’ POTUS. He doesn’t actually have to wait for the moderator or an extreme conservative to broach the subject in 4 and a half hours of debates if he thinks it is truly such a “critical issue”! — JR ] By Brad Johnson Today, after the history-making silence on global warming during the national debates, MTV’s Sway Williams challenged President Barack Obama to address his climate silence. The president acknowledged to the young voters watching the Friday afternoon interview that the climate crisis is a “critical issue,” but said he was “surprised it didn’t come up in one of the debates”: The answer is number one, we’re not moving as fast as we need to.
