Fox News host Andrea Tantaros stepped into  well-debunked territory about President Obama purportedly having once been a Muslim. Tantaros said on her radio program that Muslims view ex-Muslims poorly, and “some have said that’s President Obama, who even writes in his own book that he went to a Muslim school, he had a Muslim stepfather, he was educated in the Muslim faith, and now we have an effort by so many on the left and many in the media to ignore radical Islam.” In reality, as his  website notes , President Obama “has never been a Muslim, was not raised as a Muslim, and is a committed Christian.”  Conservative media  have  spent years  promoting the claim that Obama is or was a Muslim  to attack  him and  his policies . Fox News and its commentators  have repeatedly questioned the president’s faith  and promoted falsehoods about Obama’s religious background, including the false claim that he  attended a “madrassa.” From the April 25 edition of Talk Radio Network’s  The Andrea Tantaros Show : BILL MAHER (CLIP): There’s only one faith that kills you, or wants to kill you if you renounce the faith.

Right-wing media outlets are criticizing the Washington attorney general for enforcing non-discrimination laws against a florist who refused to offer her services for a same-sex wedding. Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a  lawsuit  on April 9 against Arlene’s Flowers and Gifts, a florist that refused to supply flowers for the wedding of a same-sex couple due to her religious beliefs. According to the lawsuit, the florist violated the state’s Consumer Protection Act, which prohibits businesses from discriminating against customers on the basis of sexual orientation

The hosts of Fox & Friends Sunday attacked the Wiccan religion, discounting its adherents as either Dungeons & Dragons players or “middle-aged, twice-divorced” women who “like a lot of incense.” On the February 17 edition of the show, hosts Tucker Carlson, Anna Kooiman, and Clayton Morris discussed a story about the University of Missouri including Wiccan holidays alongside those for other faiths in the university’s Guide to Religions, which aides faculty, staff, and students in planning activities.

The Virginia House of Delegates voted 80-19 today to approve HB1617 , a bill that would invite any religious or political university student group to discriminate as they please and still require the campus to providing them funding and access to campus facilities. This would make LGBT students particularly vulnerable to discrimination because universities’ protections for sexual orientation are  not enforceable under Virginia law. Under this bill, though, even a KKK chapter could hypothetically form, use campus resources, and openly discriminate against non-white and non-Christian students on campus.

Now that the Obama administration and Congress are engaged in a debate over immigration policy, a Media Matters review of major news outlets has found that when it comes to immigration coverage, anti-immigrant commentator Mark Krikorian continues to be the media’s preferred conservative voice. Krikorian heads the Center for Immigration Studies, a group associated with notorious nativist John Tanton and whose research has been called into question – but these facts are routinely ignored in coverage of his remarks.
