The Las Vegas Review-Journal promoted a plan to create a merit pay system for teachers, but failed to note that merit-based pay schemes have not succeeded and could hurt students in low-income areas. In the May 1 editorial , the paper claims that criteria such as “teacher experience, credentialing, and graduate degrees do not translate to higher student achievement” and should no longer be the basis for pay increases.

Air pollution has left close to 5,000 dead since March 2011, according to Iranian health officials, as pollution forced the city to close completely over the weekend. Iran’s state radio claimed going outside “could be tantamount to ‘suicide,’” according to the New York Times. The World Health Organization ranks three of Iran’s provincial towns as the world’s top 10 polluted cities.

Crisis Pregnancy Center advertisement Although so-called “crisis pregnancy centers” (CPCs) often present themselves as valid alternatives to women’s health clinics, they actually serve as a tool for anti-abortion advocates to talk women out of getting abortions, often using misleading information and conservative propaganda to shame women into making a different choice for their bodies. In San Francisco, however, a judge has confirmed that crisis pregnancy centers will no longer be able to use deceptive advertising to take advantage of vulnerable pregnant women.

One of the backbones of American immigration law is, in the words of the Supreme Court’s most recent immigration decision, a state or local government is not allowed to “achieve its own immigra­tion policy.” As the Court explained more than 70 years ago, immigration policy is inexorably tied to foreign policy, and it matters of foreign policy the United States must speak with one voice — not fifty . There are signs, however, that one of the most conservative federal appeals courts in the country does not get this. A three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit previously blocked a Dallas suburb’s ordinance prohibiting undocumented immigrants from renting housing, but the full court met today to reconsider that decision : Farmers Branch was sued four years ago after it passed an ordinance allowing the city building inspector to evict any illegal immigrant renters.
