Overwhelmingly (81 percent), Catholic voters believe that same-sex unions should have legal recognition, with only about 16 percent opposed. They do tend to prefer civil unions (41 percent) to marriage equality (40 percent), unlike the general public (which prefers marriage to civil unions 44-32)

Speaker Frank McNulty (R) sent the bill to this — the fourth committee to consider the bill — so it could be killed. Rep. Don Coram (R), who cast a deciding vote to kill the bill, acknowledged doing so despite having a gay son.
