Fox News anchor Jon Scott promoted the debunked claim that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused certain women of “whining.” In fact, Clinton was actually talking about the character Holden Caulfield from the novel The Catcher in the Rye. Scott’s false claim originated from an interview between Clinton and Marie Claire writer Ayelet Waldman. After Marie Claire released excerpts of the interview, some outlets reported that Clinton was attacking a large percentage of women , or former State Department employee Anne-Marie Slaughter .

Emily Nussbaum, the television critic at the New Yorker, writes in an even-handed review of David Simon’s HBO series about New Orleans, Treme , which was just renewed for a shortened fourth season, than an episode of the show “made me wonder if, rather than a novel or a movie, a TV show could be a poem.” It’s a perfect way of encapsulating why Treme is both important and sometimes infuriating: it’s a show that challenges our conception of what a television show can be, but that may end up reaffirming our basic demands of the form. In another television show, if I wished the dialogue would stop so I could listen to a musician finish out a song, watch an artist stitch beads into a badge, or a cook plate a dish, that would be a grave sign of trouble for that show.

Fresh off her convention speech Tuesday night, Ann Romney spent Wednesday wooing two of the GOP’s toughest audiences: women and Hispanic voters. At a lunch event Wednesday, Romney explained why Hispanic voters should vote for her husband. Pitching herself as “the daughter of immigrants,” Romney (who is the granddaughter of a Welsh coal miner) urged Latinos to get past “some of their biases” and come to their senses: You’d better really look at your future and figure out who’s going to be the guy that’s going to make it better for you and your children, and there is only one answer… It really is a message that would resonate well if they could just get past some of their biases that have been there from the Democratic machines that have made us look like we don’t care about this community.

When Mike Huckabee’s radio show debuted in April, one of the ways Cumulus Media positioned his entry into the market was as a classier alternative to Rush Limbaugh. At the time, Limbaugh was in the midst of a controversy over his nasty attacks on then-Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke, who he’d attacked for her testimony on coverage of contraception, and he looked like a viable target. As I noted at the time , “Cumulus Media’s seized that opportunity, telling stations that don’t have Limbaugh now and that might choose not to reup their contracts to carry him in the future, that in Huckabee, they’ve got a better alternative.
