As the nation mourned the April 15 bombings at the Boston Marathon, media figures used the attacks to offer conspiracy theories, make Islamophobic comments, and push petty political and personal attacks.  Conspiracy Radio Host Alex Jones: U.S.

Every election cycle brings with it a host of pundits who get the results wrong; who misread the campaign and perhaps view events through hopeful, partisan eyes. And there’s nothing unusual or especially egregious about that. What was different this time was the spectacle of a whole slate of Obama-hating conservatives who claimed that despite very clear polling evidence to the contrary, that Mitt Romney would win the election in a “landslide.” Not only would the Republican defeat Obama, but he’d also do it sweeping , historic fashion.

Wisconsin-based radio host Charlie Sykes may want to be the next Glenn Beck. But a new marketing project aimed at spreading his hard conservative talk brand beyond home station WTMJ of Milwaukee to web, video, social media and perhaps other media outlets owned by parent company Journal Communications is drawing concern in the state’s media community. Sykes’ burgeoning network of platforms resembles nothing other than a smaller-scale version of the former Fox News host’s sprawling web-based empire.

Tonight Fox allowed a guest to perpetuate a debunked myth, born on right-wing blogs, that U.S. Marines at the U.S. embassy in Cairo had been banned from carrying live ammunition, even though hours earlier the Marine Corps had dispelled that rumor

This past weekend I went to see 2016: Obama’s America , the new documentary by right-wing author Dinesh D’Souza that opened nationwide after a limited release last month. I saw it twice, in fact, in two different theaters and chatted with a few fellow movie-goers to get their impressions of the film.

My houseguest, the brilliant theorist and activist  Marina Sitrin , insisted that I had to write it down because people like her younger sister Sam needed to read it.

Almost daily we read about another apparently stiff financial penalty meted out for corporate malfeasance. This year corporations are on track to pay as much as $8 billion to resolve charges of defrauding the government, a record sum, according to the Department of Justice.  Last year big business paid the SEC $2.8 billion to settle disputes.    Sounds like an awful lot of money

Can we stop fretting for a moment about how scary Republican Paul Ryan would be as vice president (very) to note that the Romney campaign had been flailing in recent weeks, forcing Mitt to name his veep early to divert attention, and ever since, GOP media outlets have been feverishly propagandizing Ryan as a gamechanger. There has been all kinds of predictable hyperventilating, like this fawning Daily Beast piece saying that Ryan is the first “member of Generation X” to be on a national ticket. People of a certain age—older than Gen Xers—might remember the same thing was once said about Bill Clinton’s pick of Al Gore (who once was young and thin).
