Jeb Bush , who said last week that he would support a deficit-reduction plan that would include $1 in tax increases for every $10 in spending cuts. Parker went on to say: PARKER: The American people, those that support these Republicans, are saying, we’ve had enough. So, the politicians can continue with the same rhetoric and changing the terminology to enhancement, or whatever else they want to call tax increases. They don’t understand the message: We’re taxed enough already. And if you notice in the grassroots of America, incumbents are released by people taking seriously what time it is in this country. We are taxed enough already. Though she purported to give the view of what the American people think about tax increases, her repeated invocation of “taxed enough already” were really a reference to the tea party; “tea” is the acronym for “taxed enough already.” This came as no surprise considering Parker has tea party ties . In reality, Americans support tax increases as part of debt reduction. A CBS News/ New York Times poll from April found that a majority of people believe upper-income Americans pay less than their fair share of taxes.

Haynes notes that during his oath of office, Obama vowed to uphold the constitution, not the Bible. During his sermon, which criticized both fellow pastors and the congregation for their condemnation of marriage equality, “the congregation stood up and shouted their disapproval at him.” Haynes argued that the congregation should change its views: HAYNES: He [President Obama] swore upon oath to uphold, protect and defend the Constitution, not the Bible, but the Constitution of the United States. He is not the pastor of the United States, but the president of the United States. And for the first time in the history of this nation, we have a president who has dared to use his position to make the democratic promise available, not just for a select few who are up and in, but for everybody, regardless of their race, their creed, their color, or their sexual orientation! And my brothers and sisters, I solute the President. Have you ever read the Gospel and heard Jesus say anything about homosexuality?…Black folk can’t even deal with homosexuality because we got issues with sexuality. And because we got issues with sexuality we can’t have a healthy discussion about homosexuality. Why, why do you get so upset? Watch the video: Haynes’ poignant endorsement reflects the growing number of African-American voters that have shifted their views and now support same-sex marriage. Polls in Missouri and Pennsylvania , Maryland indicate that, following Obama’s endorsement, the majority of African Americans now support marriage equality. Overall, African American support for marriage equality is currently higher than the general population. -Nina Liss-Schultz

Category: Africa, author, Economy, Feeds, Health, Justice, LGBT, Marriage Equality, Media, Pennsylvania, Science, ThinkProgress, Tweets, Video, War | Comments OffThe Obama campaign introduced a slideshow on its website this week called “The Life of Julia.” The idea is simple enough — it compares the effect that President Obama’s policies have on the life of a hypothetical woman named Julia with the effect Mitt Romney’s policies would have on her life. The right-wing media immediately rained scorn on “Julia,” first with mockery on Twitter, and then in a host of blog posts and columns that labeled the slideshow “creepy” and accused the Obama campaign of glorifying a cradle-to-grave welfare state that takes a “paternalistic” view of women. First of all, it’s not clear to me how using a hypothetical to illustrate the differing effects of two candidates’ policies is “creepy,” but hey, if you’re losing an argument about whose policies hurt women, you have to come up with something, I suppose. Second, there is nothing “paternalistic” about pointing out that cutting social programs would be detrimental to women. The attacks on this slideshow are a distraction from that fact. The themes in the slideshow mostly fall into two categories: The House GOP’s budget, which Romney has endorsed , makes drastic cuts to education and social programs. These cuts have tangible effects on all Americans — including women . Romney has vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would have a direct effect on women. Richly imagined complaints from the conservative media about an online slideshow don’t change any of that.
