Extremist radio host Pete Santilli is defending and reiterating his  inflammatory attacks  on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, stating on his program that he wants “to shoot her in the vagina and let her suffer right before my eyes.” In a May 17 rant  captured  by Right Wing Watch, Santilli called for the Bush family and President Obama to be shot and for Clinton to be “shot in the vagina.” The Secret Service  told TPM Media  that they would investigate Santilli’s comments in order to “determine what a person’s intent is when making comments like this.” SANTILLI: You need to understand that what I said was very clear. I didn’t want Hillary Clinton to die. I want her to suffer painfully, right in front of me, after she’s convicted for committing crimes against humanity.

As Midwestern states assess the damage wrought by record flooding in recent weeks, scientists tell Media Matters that the media has missed an important part of the story: the impact of climate change. A Media Matters analysis finds that less than 3 percent of television and print coverage of the flooding mentioned climate change, which has increased the frequency of large rain storms and exacerbated flood risks

Fox Business’ Lou Dobbs hosted Cody Wilson – a self-described anarchist who was named one of Wired’s top 15 Most Dangerous People In The World  – to promote his 3D-printed gun, which has come under intense scrutiny. On March 5, Forbes reported that Wilson, a law student at the University of Texas, became the first person to fire a real bullet from a plastic gun made with a 3D-printer. The gun, named the “Liberator,” is made almost entirely of plastic, with the exception of a single nail used as the firing pin and a six-ounce piece of steel to comply with the Undetectable Firearms Act , which makes it illegal to manufacture or possess any firearm that is not detectable by a walk-through metal detector.

In the midst of the most promising time for the gun violence prevention debate in decades, the National Rifle Association will name a new president at their annual meeting May 3-5.  Alabama lawyer Jim Porter will replace current NRA President David Keene, whose two-year term is expiring. Here’s what the media should know about Porter , a conspiracy theorist who calls the Civil War the “War of Northern Aggression” and represents more of the same for the organization: 1.

Conservative media have been facilitating a witch hunt against U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, claiming that her public statements regarding the attack on the diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, were untruthful and misleading. In fact, Rice was using talking points that had been approved by the CIA, and she repeatedly emphasized that the information was preliminary.

The author Mark Twain once remarked that “whisky is for drinking; water is for fighting over” and a series of reports from intelligence agencies and research groups indicate the prospect of a water war is becoming increasingly likely.  In March, a report from the office of the US Director of National Intelligence said the risk of conflict would grow as water demand is set to outstrip sustainable current supplies by 40 per cent by 2030. “These threats are real and they do raise serious national security concerns,” Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, said after the report’s release

On Hannity , Dick Morris returned to fearmongering over potential Senate ratification of the Law of the Sea Treaty. Morris previously suggested that the treaty was part of a plot by the Obama administration to create “one world government.” Tonight his anti-Law of the Sea Treaty push took the form of a series of falsehoods about the treaty. For instance, Morris suggested that the Law of the Sea Treaty would harm our Navy’s control over the high seas. But the Navy actually supports the relevant treaty provisions and has done so since 1983. Morris claimed : “This treaty basically sets up a judicial arbitration tribunal appointed by the United Nations to resolve disputes about sea lanes. Now, currently the dispute resolution mechanism is the U.S. Navy that goes out and polices the world’s waterways because we’re incomparably the world’s greatest naval power and keeps the sea lanes open. But this would give the UN a veto over our Navy’s decisions.” The reality is : The Navy strongly supports the provisions discussed by Morris. In 2003, Admiral Mike Mullen stated : “Since 1983, the Joint Chiefs and the combatant commanders have supported the navigational provisions of the convention because of the core belief that a comprehensive, widely accepted, and stable legal basis for the world’s oceans is essential to U.S. national security.” Morris claimed : “[O]nce it’s passed, a treaty is forever. You can’t repeal it. It has the force under the Supremacy Clause of a constitutional amendment. … And nobody is talking about this.” The reality is : Morris just made this up out of thin air. The Law of the Sea Treaty itself allows nations to repeal it. From the treaty : “A State Party may, by written notification addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, denounce this Convention and may indicate its reasons. … The denunciation shall take effect one year after the date of receipt of the notification, unless the notification specifies a later date.” Furthermore, if treaties were really “forever” and couldn’t be repealed, this would come as news to former President George W. Bush. In late 2001, Bush announced that the White House was withdrawing from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. If Morris were correct, the ABM Treaty would still be in effect. Morris’ constitutional interpretation is also pure fantasy. The Supremacy Clause of the Constitution states : “This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States, shall be the supreme law of the land.” If Morris’ interpretation were correct, all federal laws would also have the force of constitutional amendments since the Supremacy Clause makes no distinction between “laws of the United States” and treaties.

A May 17 New York Times article reported that a group of Republican strategists have proposed a sizable campaign to attack President Obama’s character. The article set off a wave of condemnations not just from progressives, but also from Mitt Romney and one of the high-profile conservative donors whom the proposal was pitched to. On his Fox News show, Sean Hannity acknowledged Romney’s rejection of the proposal’s tactics, which focus on playing up Obama’s relationship with his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Hannity played a clip in which Romney said, “I want to make it very clear: I repudiate that effort.” After the clip of Romney, Hannity said, “Now, Governor Romney, I have to respectfully disagree with you.” He continued: Now, I do believe the economy, jobs, national security are by far the most pressing issue [sic] facing the country today. I also feel that every candidate, though, needs to be fully vetted. Now, that’s something the mainstream media failed to do back in 2008 with Barack Obama, and I believe that the president’s relationship with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, a man that influenced him for over 20 years, inspired him, is a very important campaign issue. After all, it is a matter of character. Hannity is creating an alternate reality in which the “mainstream media failed” to vet Obama in 2008. For instance, on the subject of Wright — Hannity’s undying obsession — there was a blizzard of media coverage. Over the course of about two months in the early part of 2008, The New York Times and The Washington Post published dozens of articles and columns that mentioned Wright. Hannity is wishing for a 2008 that never happened.

“The Amateur” by Edward Klein is a book about an inept, arrogant ideologue who maintains an absurdly high opinion of his own talents even as he blatantly fails to achieve his goals. Oh, and President Obama is in this book too.” – NY Times’ Janet Maslin “The Amateur is the best book I’ve read on how Barack Obama is wrecking our country .” – Donald Trump, on the book jacket Though his previous work has been marred by falsehoods and his journalistic integrity  called into question  by people from across the ideological spectrum, you can rest assured that Ed Klein is still a serious reporter. Just ask Ed Klein. As  New York Times  book reviewer Janet Maslin  noted in her justifiably brutal review of Klein’s new anti-Obama book,  The Amateur , Klein announces on the first page that it “is a reporter’s book,” and recounts the “nearly two hundred” interviews and “dozens of four-inch-thick three-ring notebooks” of research he compiled during its writing. These boasts of gumshoe reporting and exhaustive inquiry come off as a feeble attempt by Klein to explain why anyone should respect his new book given his ugly track record. That Klein’s credibility needs repair is beyond question, but it’s doubtful that people who stopped taking Klein seriously after he wrote a book forwarding suggestions that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian — and that Chelsea was conceived when Bill raped Hillary — will be swayed by his claims of scholarship. (Klein’s other recent work includes an  embarrassing self-published novel  ”based on real stuff” co-authored with conspiracy theorist  John LeBoutillier about a CIA agent who discovers that Obama is a Kenyan-born Muslim Manchurian candidate.) In a 2005 column excoriating Klein’s  The Truth About Hillary , conservative  Wall Street Journal  columnist Peggy Noonan  called  the book ”poorly written, poorly thought, poorly sourced, full of the kind of loaded language that is appropriate to a polemic but not an investigative work.” The same criticisms can all be leveled at  The Amateur .

Fox News has spent years calling undocumented immigrants “illegals” and “illegal aliens.” But the network’s practice has a vocal critic within its own building: Fox News host Geraldo Rivera.  In a  column published  on Fox News Latino, Rivera wrote that “cable news and talk radio are making a killing demonizing undocumented immigrants” and noted that  during the immigration reform debate , “ample file footage exists in every news outlet’s video library of young Latinos jumping the border wall or wading across the Rio Grande.” Rivera’s column took primary aim at the use of “two powerful pejoratives, illegal and alien,” writing: Like the words ‘Jew’ or ‘slob’ or ‘slut’, the phrase ‘illegal alien’ has the elegance of being harsh, but defensible, if accurate. Although it can be used as a cutting reference, it can still be uttered in polite company without fear of raising many eyebrows, especially among those who feel similarly negative about the individual being described.   While discussing the use of ”illegal alien” and “illegals,” Rivera implored media outlets — including “my own” — to stop using the slur because it’s dehumanizing and lazy:

Over the weekend, reformed deadbeat dad Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) smeared the push in Washington to keep student loan interest rates from doubling as giving away “free college education.” Walsh’s remarks came at a town hall meeting in Wheeling, Illinois after being asked about the impending student loan showdown in Congress. Democrats are pushing to keep student loan interest rates from doubling their current rate in July; Republicans have blocked their efforts thus far. The Illinois congressman was beside himself with disbelief, telling the audience incredulously that President Obama was pushing for “basically free college education.” CONSTITUENT: The latest debt twist of course is student loans, where the federal government has created such demand over the past 20 years that the cost of education has skyrocketed. I believe Congress wants to accommodate this reduction in the interest rate by paying for it, via reallocation of funds from some medical account. I believe the president wants simply to go further into debt. How will that play out and will the Republican House stay strong and if we want to subsidize that more can we at least pay for it? WALSH: Look what this president’s doing. He was running around a month and a half ago basically saying, “free contraceptives for everybody.” Free contraceptives. What’s he been doing now the past couple weeks? Basically free college education. Student debt? Don’t worry about it. Don’t worry about it, you’ll pick it up. Student loan interest rates will double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent in two months if Walsh and House Republicans continue to block Democratic efforts to keep them low. Republicans passed an extension of the rate last week but paid for it with funds from health care reform , knowing Democrats would never accept it. If an agreement isn’t reached, they will double at a time when student loan debt is larger than credit card debt and car loan debt across the country. As the cost of tuition has soared, so has the amount of money students have had to borrow to pay for their education. This is not about “free college education”; it’s about preventing student loan debt from becoming an even larger problem than it already is.
