Model international actors Iran and North Korea came together to block the adoption of a treaty regulating the $70 billion dollar arms trade at the United Nations on Thursday, no doubt endearing them to the National Rifle Association. The Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) has been in negotiations for the past two weeks, the second attempt to gain a unanimously agreed upon text. The final draft was put before the delegates on Wednesday, with the assumption that it was set to cruise to an easy approval

The Daily Caller’s story linking Sen. Robert Menendez to prostitutes continues to disintegrate, as questions emerge about whether the only named source in the original article was paid to make the accusations. While the focus on possible payments to the source further establishes that the story is a farce, it also risks diverting attention from the central fact that the article never should have run in the first place.

National Rifle Association board member Ted Nugent made inflammatory comments about President Obama and said Cubans “haven’t figured out personal hygiene” during an appearance on an online radio show hosted by 9/11 truther and conspiracy theorist Pete Santilli. Santilli, who has promoted conspiracy theories relating to the December 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 children and six educators dead, does little to hide the fact that he is a conspiracy theorist.

Frequent Fox News guest Lars Larson made the spurious claims that a recently enacted New York gun law forces siblings to run background checks on each other when transferring weapons and would allow a mental health professional to report patients who they “don’t trust” to prohibit them from purchasing a gun. In fact, the  Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013  (SAFE) expands background checks to private firearm sales but exempts immediate family members from performing checks

One of the main themes senators on the Senate Armed Services Committee committed themselves to today during Chuck Hagel’s confirmation hearing to be the next Secretary of Defense was — not wondering whether Hagel fully supports a diplomatic approach to Iran’s nuclear program, as most Americans do — but rather, whether the former Republican senator is willing to take this nation into another war in the Middle East if necessary. Senator after senator, both Republican and Democrat, repeatedly sought Hagel’s reassurance that he is committed to starting a war with Iran — as if the last 10 years of a disastrous war in Iraq had never happened. The New York Times reports that for the first time, the United States and Iran have agreed to bilateral negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program. The Times notes that the news “has the potential” to help President Obama “make the case that he is nearing a diplomatic breakthrough in the decade-long effort by the world’s major powers to curb Tehran’s nuclear ambitions.” The Times adds that “it is also far from clear,” whether Mitt Romney “would go through with the negotiation should he win election.” Update The White House has issued a statement denying the Times’ report: It’s not true that the United States and Iran have agreed to one-on-one talks or any meeting after the American elections.

Conservative media figures who have been longtime supporters of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are accusing the Obama administration of pursuing a policy of disengagement in the Middle East, pointing to the end of the war in Iraq and the troop drawdown in Afghanistan. But unmentioned in their criticism is when they think it would have been an appropriate time to withdraw from both countries, if at all.

Our guest blogger is Sarah Margon, Deputy Washington Director at Human Rights Watch Nabeel Rajab (Photo: Reuters) In May 2011, President Obama spoke publicly about the importance of supporting reform — and individual reformers — across the Middle East. He noted “the chance to show that America values the dignity of the street vendor in Tunisia more than the raw power of the dictator” and that the United States “supports a set of universal rights…[including] free speech, the freedom of peaceful assembly, the freedom of religion, equality for men and women under the rule of law, and the right to choose your own leaders.” But in Bahrain, where massive nonviolent protests against the current regime began in early 2011, critical underlying issues have yet to be resolved and the U.S.’s support for such reform has been halfhearted.

(Photo: AP) Mitt Romney and his campaign foreign policy advisers have had a hard time trying to differentiate the presumptive GOP nominee’s Iran policy from President Obama’s. But at the same time, they’ve been offering clues that a President Romney would lean more toward the military option in dealing with Iran’s nuclear program. An anonymous Romney foreign policy adviser recently reinforced that view, telling the National Journal in an article published today that there isn’t much discussion among Romney’s team about diplomacy with Iran: Meanwhile, however, the Israelis—who are engaged in their own intense debate about whether to strike—hear a cacophony of voices in the Romney camp.

A former Iranian interior minister from the government of President Mohammad Khatami suggested in a talk to a group of student activists that Iran put the nuclear issue to a referendum, according to a report in BBC’s Persian service . According to an online translation, Abdollah Nuri told the students that “a decision must be based on general consent” — a contention he supported with the Islamic Republic’s constitution. Though Iran’s nuclear program has in the past gotten widespread public support, according to unreliable polling, respondents to a recent online survey on Iran’s state-run news site overwhelming supported nuclear concessions in order to strike a deal with the West (until the poll was taken down)
