Fox News is leading the right-wing media chorus baselessly claiming Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the apparent bomber in the Boston Marathon attacks, should be indefinitely detained as an “enemy combatant,” even though legal experts maintain it is unlikely he qualifies for this designation. Militarily detaining U.S. citizens apprehended in this country as “enemy combatants” for acts of terror is extremely rare and constitutionally questionable

While calling for profiling of American Muslims, Fox News host Eric Bolling attacked Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), calling him the “Muslim apologist in Congress” and describing him as “very dangerous.” On Fox News’ The Five , Bolling called for profiling of Muslims following the attacks of the Boston Marathon. During the segment, Bolling criticized Ellison, asserting that he’s “very dangerous” and has been “the Muslim apologist in Congress for a long time.” After calling him dangerous, Bolling noted that Ellison “raised his right hand and took the oath of office on the Quran”: Bolling’s attack is part of a long line of smears directed at Ellison.

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty this week that he thinks the chances are “high” that Iran will face military attack if the regime in Tehran doesn’t change course on its nuclear program. In that event, Lieberman said he’ll “hope and pray” the regime falls: “I think we have the capability either to eliminate the Iranian nuclear weapons program or to disable it in a way that it will be delayed for enough years that we may hope and pray that there will be a regime change and that there will be a more democratic and friendly regime.” Watch the clip: Lieberman pushed a resolution earlier this year ruling out containing a nuclear armed Iran and loosened the threshold for military action to an Iranian nuclear weapons “ capability ” — a position that some have observed would make a diplomatic solution to the crisis more difficult .

Salon’s Alex Pareene made a  good observation  yesterday about the future of  Wall Street Journal  opinion-slinger Gordon Crovitz’s  100-percent incorrect claim  that government was not involved in the creation of the internet: I am very confident that “The Government Had Nothing To Do With Inventing The Internet That Is a Liberal Lie” will become one of those wonderful myths that all true-believer conservatives subscribe to, like “FDR and the New Deal made the Depression worse” and “Reagan Was a Good President.” It’s true; the conservative canon is littered with verifiably false claims masquerading as unshakeable truths — in some cases, as foundational principles. Other examples include “global warming is a hoax” and “tax cuts increase revenue.” Most of them have been around for so long that their origins are murky, but we have the benefit of being able to observe this particular untruth move through the conservative ecosystem. It’s sort of like watching evolution happen! (If evolution were real and not another hoax, that is.)
