Peggy Noonan goes full wingnut in her Wall Street Journal column this morning, asking if the White House’s response to the Benghazi attack “cost American lives.” The argument she lays out is that President Obama and his team, faced with the death of an ambassador and three other Americans, deliberately scuttled any sort of military response to keep the story from looking bad. Media outlets including NPR and Fox News are targeting federal disability benefits programs through a campaign deceptively portraying these programs as wasteful and unsustainable. In reality, these programs have low fraud rates and help the rising number of Americans with severe disabilities survive when they are   unable to work. Is the recent increase in the number of people receiving disability benefits surprising?

Cardinal Timothy Dolan told ABC’s This Week on Sunday that gay people are entitled to “friendship” but not a long-last romantic relationship in the eyes of the Catholic Church. Appearing on the program following oral arguments at the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of two laws targeting gay and lesbian couples, Dolan said that the Church should treat same-sex couples with love, while reminding them that “sexual love…is intended only for a man and a woman”: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS (HOST): And you know, especially this week – because it’s been at the top of the news – for many gay and lesbian Americans –– gay and lesbian Catholics, they feel unwelcome –– in the Church. The Washington Post’s  new reader representative, Doug Feaver, made clear when he was offered the position that he did not want it to be full time. And it appears he is getting his wish, according to Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt, who said Feaver, a former  Post  editor who has been retired since 2006, will likely spend just two or three days a week on the job and have no set weekly column. Feaver replaces Patrick Pexton, who as  Post  ombudsman was hired on a two-year contract that allowed complete independence

The last four years have produced historic debates over the nature of America’s health care safety net. But Medicaid — a state-federal partnership program that serves some of the sickest, poorest, most overlooked Americans — is still in need of serious reforms when it comes to its approach toward covering Americans with special health care needs. Federal requirements for the populations and services that states must cover under their Medicaid programs are currently broken up into “mandatory” and “optional” categories — misleading characterizations that have nothing to do with the actual medical or financial realities of the Americans these broad generalizations claim to encapsulate.

By Jeff Masters via Wunderblog With a name like “Language Intelligence: Lessons on Persuasion from Jesus, Shakespeare, Lincoln, and Lady Gaga”, a book with a title like that compels one to pick it up and see what the heck the author is talking about.
