Prefacing his comments by insisting he knows “how foreign affairs work,” Glenn Beck on April 18 announced that his website, The Blaze , was breaking news about the Boston Marathon bombing: A Saudi national student on a student visa and was “absolutely involved” in the Patriot’s Day blast was being deported by the U.S. government for security reasons. Beck went further , claiming the student, or “dirt bag,” as the host described him, was “possibly the ringleader” in the bombing that killed three people and injured more than one hundred, and the government was deliberately covering it up

Many folks asked for high-resolution and Celsius versions of the chart I posted 10 days ago : Temperature change over past 11,300 years (in blue, via  Science, 2013 ) plus projected warming this century on humanity’s current emissions path (in red, via  recent literature ). The high-resolution F version is here and the high-resolution C version is here . As an aside, readers know I have scaled back my coverage of the denier blogs for two reasons

The Washington Post’s  new reader representative, Doug Feaver, made clear when he was offered the position that he did not want it to be full time. And it appears he is getting his wish, according to Editorial Page Editor Fred Hiatt, who said Feaver, a former  Post  editor who has been retired since 2006, will likely spend just two or three days a week on the job and have no set weekly column. Feaver replaces Patrick Pexton, who as  Post  ombudsman was hired on a two-year contract that allowed complete independence

Republicans are now resorting to their often-used kitchen-sink strategy , this time in an effort to prevent Chuck Hagel from becoming Secretary of Defense. There’s no real substantive reason Hagel shouldn’t lead the Pentagon but that isn’t stoping the GOP from playing politics with national security ( again ). Sen

Appearing on Fox News Sunday this week, National Rifle Association executive vice president Wayne LaPierre was pressed about the controversial ad the group created in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut school massacre that referenced the armed protection President Obama’s daughters receive. Even as host Chris Wallace belittled as “ridiculous” the ad’s premise that all children deserve the same kind of protection that the president’s children have, LaPierre defend the ad and said, “Tell that to the people of Newtown.” “So they should have Secret Service”

Fox News’ Bob Beckel was shouted down by his Five co-host Greg Gutfeld for attempting to report that 2012 was the hottest year on record in the contiguous United States. This was the network’s first mention of the record heat, which has been covered by every major news outlet except for Fox .

– IIASA News Release Limiting climate change to target levels will become much more difficult to achieve, and more expensive, if action is not taken soon, according to a new analysis from IIASA, ETH Zurich, and NCAR. The new study, published this week in the journal  Nature, examined the probability of keeping average global temperatures from rising more than 2°C above preindustrial levels under varying levels of climate policy stringency, and thus mitigation costs. In addition, the study for the first time quantified and ranked the uncertainties associated with efforts to mitigate climate change, including questions about the climate itself, uncertainties related to future technologies and energy demand, and political uncertainties as to when action will be taken.

Earlier this afternoon, the newly sworn in House of Representatives passed, on a largely party-line vote, a Republican-backed rules package which authorizes a House body to continue to defend the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act and which embraces a continued witchhunt against Attorney General Eric Holder . Immediately before this vote, however, House Democrats attempted to insert the SIMPLE Voting Act of 2013 , which would require early voting for 10 hours a day for a period of 15 days before a federal election, and which would require polling places to provide sufficient voting systems and poll workers to ensure that no voter waits more than one hour to vote, into the rules package. This voting rights bill was defeated 194-229, also on a largely party line vote
