Fox News political analyst Dick Morris, who has been absent from the network for nearly three months following a directive that any segments with him would have to be cleared by a top network executive — will appear on CNN February 6. Morris announced the appearance — his first on CNN since 2002, according to a search of the Nexis database — on his website , writing, “You read it right! I will be a guest on The Piers Morgan Show on CNN, yes CNN, this Wednesday night at 9 PM EST.” After appearing dozens of times to provide political analysis in the weeks leading up to the 2012 election, Morris has not appeared on Fox News since a November 12 interview on Hannity , according to a Media Matters review of the Nexis and TVEyes.com databases. By contrast, following the 2008 presidential election, he appeared 19 times on Fox’s primetime alone from November 13, 2008, through February 5, 2009, making regular appearances to discuss the political news of the day on  The O’Reilly Factor , Hannity and Colmes / Hannity , and On the Record

National media tend to assume conservative Justice Antonin Scalia’s vote in the upcoming Voting Rights Act case – a federal trial court  and  a federal appeals court  found, there is no room for equivocation [as in recent school desegregation cases]. If Justice Kennedy votes to strike down Section 5, he will be calling a halt to an unfinished effort to end what the Supreme Court once called  “an insidious and pervasive evil.” Congress gathered an enormous amount of evidence in 2006 about the persistence of voting discrimination in covered jurisdictions

Fox News and Rush Limbaugh have each attacked President Obama for his recent comments pointing out their influence on the political process. But both Fox News and Limbaugh have indeed influenced Republican politicians’ actions in the past. In a recent interview with The New Republic , Obama said he believes that bipartisan legislation is more likely to pass if a Republican member of Congress isn’t “punished on Fox News or by Rush Limbaugh for working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest.” Fox News’ Megyn Kelly and Chris Stirewalt discussed Obama’s comments on Monday’s broadcast of America Live .

The Wall Street Journal advised Republicans to insist on certain Medicare and Social Security cuts — such as raising the Medicare eligibility age and cutting future Social Security benefits — as part of a deficit reduction deal with Democrats. But the Journal’s proposals would harm retirees without providing much savings to the federal government. WSJ Proposes Raising The Medicare Eligibility Age To 67 WSJ : If GOP Can’t Enact The Paul Ryan Model, Raise The Medicare Eligibility Age.

In a November 30 article in  The Atlantic , national correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg wrote that it was “too late” to enact gun violence prevention laws, using discredited research from John Lott’s “More Guns, Less Crime” thesis and debunked claims by criminologist Gary Kleck that defensive gun uses outpace gun crimes. Goldberg’s Claim That Americans Agree With The National Rifle Association’s “Basic Message” Of Weak Gun Laws Is Contradicted By Polling Goldberg: “It’s Too Late” To Enact Strong Gun Violence Prevention Laws, Americans Agree With “Basic Message” Of NRA.  From the December 2012 edition of  The Atlantic :  [G]un-control efforts, while noble, would only have a modest impact on the rate of gun violence in America.  Why?  Because it’s too late.  There are an estimated 280 million to 300 million guns in private hands in America–many legally owned, many not.

Right-wing media figures are urging Republicans to refuse to compromise on budget and taxes, action that would induce automatic government budget cuts and broad tax increases and herald another recession. But economists agree that a budget deal needs to include some tax increases, which would significantly raise revenue, and that more revenue must be part of a balanced solution to lowering the deficit. Right-Wing Media Advise GOP Not To Compromise On Taxes Even If End Result Is A Recession Sean Hannity: “If We Go Off The Fiscal Cliff, Go.” On his radio show, Fox News’ Sean Hannity said that Republicans “were not elected to rubber stamp” President Obama’s agenda, and so if Democrats won’t accept a deal that Republicans offer, “if we go off the fiscal cliff, go, because Democrats are publically stating they want it.” He suggested that the subsequent recession would be blamed on Democrats and Obama, not the Republicans.

As lawmakers work on a balanced deal of spending cuts and revenue increases to avoid the coming fiscal cliff, another prominent Republican is publicly rejecting Grover Norquist’s no-tax pledge. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) told a local television station in Georgia on Wednesday that he will no longer support the Taxpayer Protection Pledge to never vote for any tax increases under any circumstances.

The National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative (NRA-ILA) issued an  election postmortem  claiming that the public has been misled by the media “about the effectiveness of NRA campaign spending.” The release is the  latest attempt  by the NRA to sustain what has been a  false media narrative  about the NRA’s ability to influence elections.   Despite the NRA’s protestations, the outcome on Election Day could hardly have been worse for the gun organization. The NRA failed to achieve its main goal, the defeat of President Obama, and also backed the losing Senate candidate in  six out of seven races  where the NRA spent more than $100,000
