Another poll , this one from the Baltimore Sun, shows marriage equality winning in Maryland, with a 49 percent plurality prepared to approve Question 6 and just 39 percent opposed. The Sun notes that “more than half of likely black voters favor legalizing same-sex marriage, compared with a quarter who are opposed.” A similar poll last week found 51 percent support for the referendum.

As nearly every major public opinion poll puts President Obama ahead of Mitt Romney, conservative pundits’ new favorite accusation is that the polls are biased because the media is oversampling Democrats. On Thursday, Romney’s senior adviser, Eric Fehrnstrom, repeated this line on Fox News to explain why the polls couldn’t be trusted: FEHRNSTROM: Some of these polls have been called into question because they assume a higher Democratic turnout in 2012 than we experienced in 2008. I don’t know of any campaign operative or political scientist in the country who thinks Democrats are going to show up in the same number as they did four years ago

In the 2012 election cycle, President Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney have been keeping one specific demographic in mind – Latinos. Many analysts think Hispanic voters are the key to the outcome of the 2012 presidential election, specifically in swing states such as Nevada and Florida

A Pew Research Center for the People & the Press poll, taken after the Colorado shooting, shows that 47 percent of Americans say it is more important to control gun ownership, compared to 46 percent who say it is more important to protect the rights of Americans to own guns. While Pew calls this “no significant change” from April numbers, it does represent a 5-point swing since their previous poll, in which gun rights were prioritized over gun control, 49 percent to 45 percent.

A new poll from Brigham Young University actually has good news for those advocating for legal rights for the LGBT community, since it finds that a full 71 percent of Utah voters support some kind of legal recognition for same-sex couples. However, the poll’s packaging in the Mormon-affiliated Deseret News — with a headline proclaiming that a “majority of Utahns oppose gay marriage” — puts a subtle anti-equality spin on the positive results.

While the movement among Republicans toward support for marriage equality has been gradually growing over recent years, a Washington Post poll shows GOP opposition has intensified somewhat following President Obama’s endorsement of same-sex marriage. The poll indicates that Republicans ages 18 to 44 are evolving far more quickly — and are currently evenly divided at 46 percent for and 46 percent against.

A new CNN/ORC poll shows that a majority of Americans continue to support marriage equality, with 54 percent saying it should be legal and only 42 percent opposed, the highest level of favor ever found in this particular poll. Also noteworthy was the fact that 60 percent said they have close friends and families or families who are gay, up from 49 percent in 2010. Unfortunately, understanding of sexual orientation has not really improved — 34 percent still believe that someone who is homosexual can change their sexual orientation, down only two points in the past five years.

A new Public Policy Polling poll finds that African-American voters in Missouri have shifted drastically on the question of same-sex marriage since they were last polled in January. They now support marriage equality 50-31, whereas before opposition was much stronger at 25-44, a 38 point shift. Missouri follows polls in Pennsylvania , Maryland , and nationally that all show African-American voters embracing marriage equality in the wake of President Obama’s endorsement. In addition, 64 percent of all Missouri voters support legal recognition for same-sex couples through either marriage equality or civil unions.

Months of extreme anti-immigrant rhetoric from Mitt Romney and his GOP rivals seems to be taking its toll, with Hispanic voters going to President Obama in a landslide according to a new Pew Hispanic Center poll released today .  Despite overwhelming disapproval of his administration’s handling of illegal immigrants, President Obama still leads Mitt Romney 68 percent to 23 percent among Hispanics.  Romney recently told TIME Magazine that he wants “to do as well as [he] possibly could” among Hispanic voters; however, today’s poll shows Romney is highly unlikely to reach the record 40 percent share of the Hispanic vote George W. Bush attracted in 2004 and that he may well do far worse than the 31 percent share John McCain took in 2008 .
