In a speech that steered clear of policy proscriptions, but that urged a need for creative thinking about copyright and content distribution, former President Bill Clinton on Friday called for further discussion “about the need to give people an appropriate return on their ideas and development of them, and presentation of it, in film and music and in other areas, and the need to give it as quickly as possible to the world.” Clinton’s speech came at the Creativity Conference, a half-day meeting hosted by the Motion Picture Association of America, Microsoft, and Time Magazine, where participants ranging from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor to HBO CEO Richard Plepler discussed issues in the creative economy ranging from federal research and development investment to copyright.

11:49 : Daniel Day-Lewis is an exceedingly dull choice for Best Actor, but at least the man gives good, and gracious speech on a night in which the speeches have been totally unremarkable. 11:43 : Jennifer Lawrence’s win for Best Actress in Silver Linings Playbook is one of the least interesting choices in the field, but at least it’s one in a field packed with interesting options

Stephen King — best selling author of the very kind of violent books that gun advocates say contribute to gun violence — has penned Guns , a 25-page essay dismissing their criticism, while calling for universal background checks for gun purchases, and a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. A self-described “blue-state American” who also owns guns, King is no stranger to how individuals can and do turn to art as inspiration for violence

The National Hockey League and its Players Association agreed on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement early this morning, and while league owners and players must still ratify it, the deal will almost certainly end the owners’ 113-day lockout of players. The deal comes just five days before the league’s self-imposed deadline to cancel the season, and it should get teams back on the ice in the next two weeks

Fox News co-host Greg Gutfeld echoed statistics used by a Republican congressman to suggest right-to-carry laws decrease violent crime — but studies have shown no such correlation. Gutfeld also hyped the debunked claim that there are “2.5 million instances each year” in which a gun is used in self-defense.

Conservative media figures have offered up several bizarre excuses in order to deflect attention from the role gun violence played in the murder of Kasandra Perkins by Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher. It’s difficult to write about Cloud Atlas , the sweeping adaptation of David Mitchell’s 2004 nesting doll of a novel, by Lana Wachowski, Andy Wachowski, and Tom Tykwer, if only because it’s doing so many different things, telling stories that range from the slave trade to multiple post-apocalypses, testing the limits of how big an independent movie can be and still be viable, and exploring the power of reincarnation and liberation movements. I don’t really think that Cloud Atlas works–it’s simultaneously too much, and too little–but while its characters are reaching for better lives, there’s a lot in Cloud Atlas that suggests what a better movie-going landscape might look like

What do you say about a man who conquered cancer, won seven world championships, used his profile as one of the world’s greatest athletes to raise and donate millions of dollars to cancer research, and had the most crippling fall from grace perhaps any American athlete has ever had? What do you say about a man who is an outstanding narcissist in an industry full of narcissists, but cared enough about the awful disease that nearly took his life that he devoted the rest of his to making other lives better? Is he a fraud, a self-serving cheat, a professional scam?

An estimated 4,800 people will receive care from a free four-day Los Angeles health clinic next week, The Lead Type reports . The clinic will run from next Thursday to Sunday to provide a variety of health services — including immunizations, women’s health screenings, dental cleanings, and eye exams — to Americans who don’t have medical insurance and can’t usually access this type of care: Some people began lining up as early as Friday to ensure they obtain a wristband, which will be required for admission to the clinic. Distribution of the wristbands is expected to begin at 1 p.m.
