Last week, the Colorado Division of Insurance became the second state agency in the week to issue a bulletin stating that discrimination in health coverage on the basis of sexual orientation and transgender status is impermissible under state law. The bulletin is the latest in a series of decisions by states and employers clearly stating that no person should be denied health care or coverage based on who they are

As expected, the Minnesota House Civil Law Committee advanced marriage equality legislation tonight with a vote of 10-7, reflecting today’s similar vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill now advances to the full House, but as in the Senate, its potential for passage there is not yet known

Fox’s Bill O’Reilly condemned a new Massachusetts school policy protecting transgender students, suggesting that teachers should be allowed to out their transgender students to their families and fear mongering that “wise guys” might use the policy to infiltrate girls’ restrooms. During the February 26 edition of The O’Reilly Factor , O’Reilly railed against a new directive for Massachusetts schools concerning the treatment of transgender students. The directive – which is aimed at encouraging non-discrimination on the basis of gender identity – instructs school officials to acknowledge students by their preferred gender identity and respect transgender students’ privacy when discussing their gender identity with their parents.

Jeanne Manford and her son Morty The founder of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Jeanne Manford, has passed away at age 92. In 1972, Manford accompanied her son Morty to a Gay Activists Alliance demonstration, where he ended up being attacked, leading her to declare in the New York Post, “I have a homosexual son and I love him.” PFLAG National Executive Director Jody Huckaby paid tribute to Manford today: Jeanne was one of the fiercest fighters in the battle for acceptance and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. It is truly humbling to imagine in 1972 – just 40 years ago – a simple schoolteacher started this movement of family and ally support, without benefit of any of the technology that today makes a grassroots movement so easy to organize.

A new study published this week in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine shows that various types of victimization, including bullying, physical threats, and sexual assault can greatly impact suicidal thinking in young people ages 10-17.
