Fox News cherry picked President Obama’s comments to try to rehabilitate Mitt Romney’s false suggestion during the debate that Obama had not referred to the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya as an act of terror. On September 12, Obama said : “No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America.” Obama  also referred  to the Benghazi attack as an “act of terror” while campaigning in Colorado on September 13 when he said: “To all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished.” But in a report on Fox & Friends First , national correspondent Steve Centanni ignored Obama’s September 13 statement.

John Fund, on a brief hiatus from lying about voter fraud , writes at National Review Online today that there’s a vicious double-standard at play in the media’s disparate treatment of Mother Jones ‘ video of Mitt Romney denigrating half the country as incorrigible welfare parasites, and James O’Keefe’s series of “sting” videos. “The [ Mother Jones ] tape was played over and over with no caveats, hand-wringing, or speculation that it might have been doctored,” writes Fund, who goes on to complain that O’Keefe routinely faces accusations of video doctoring. This complaint is echoed by O’Keefe himself, who has been busily clucking his tongue about the “double standard amongst professional journalists.” That’s utter nonsense

I have to admit that, in a week full of absolute ridiculousness in politics, I’m feeling refreshed by the return of my favorite political joke of the cycle, Key & Peele ‘s skits about Luther, President Obama’s anger translator: Key and Peele Get More: Comedy Central , Funny Videos , Funny TV Shows It’s wonderfully cathartic to hear Luther spit “I did not realize that was an option,” about Romney’s refusal to release his tax returns in contrast to the mountain of disclosure President Obama’s been required to do in response to deeply specious claims about his citizenship. I don’t want to see Obama lose his cool during the election, even as I’m angry at the double standard that would condemn him as an angry black man. But Luther is my favorite fictional surrogate for the President, and Obama himself is a fan as well .

By Jessica Goad The Center for American Progress and the Sierra Club are unveiling three documentary videos in a series called “ Public Lands, Private Profits .”  One of the videos follows residents of Panguitch, Utah, a small town near Bryce Canyon National Park that has been thrust in the middle of an age-old fight between tourism and natural resource extraction. At issue is a proposed mine on public lands adjacent to an operating mine on private lands owned by the Alton Coal Company.  The new mine would effectively quintuple the area under development.  Some residents and local business owners fear that the increased truck traffic on Panguitch’s main street will negatively impact tourism, which the county relies on for economic development more than any other county in the state

Anti-choice activist Lila Rose and her group Live Action have released an undercover video of an activist in New York City pretending to want to abort a fetus if it’s not a male. This is part their effort to manufacture evidence that Planned Parenthood facilitates gender-based abortion — even though statistics show that sex-selective abortion simply does not happen with any regularity in the United States, as the vast majority of abortions are performed before gender is detectable, and the gender birth ratio in America is close to even. In the video, the activist tells an employee at a Planned Parenthood clinic that her fetus “looks like it’s gonna be a girl, another girl,” and “we’d really like to have a son.” The employee gives the activist advice on prenatal care and testing, and she explains the services the clinic offers. Despite Live Action’s suggestion, at no point is the Planned Parenthood employee in the video shown encouraging the phony Live Action “patient” to undergo a sex-selective abortion — in fact, the employee specifically states that “it’s not up to us to decide what is a good or bad reason for somebody to decide to terminate a pregnancy.” This is in line with Planned Parenthood’s stated policy : “no Planned Parenthood clinic will deny a woman an abortion based on her reasons for wanting one, except in those states that explicitly prohibit sex-selective abortions (Arizona, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Illinois).” Sex-selective abortion is not something that exists in real life in America to any notable degree. But you won’t hear that from Lila Rose, who has declared it her mission to ” take out Planned Parenthood .” And don’t expect to hear that from those in the right-wing media who uncritically hype Rose’s hoax videos and dishonest activism, of whom Bill O’Reilly and Michelle Malkin are merely the latest.

During today’s Squawk Box , CNBC co-anchor Joe Kernen assisted guest Donald Trump’s effort to push debunked claims about President Obama’s birthplace by citing a supposed quote from Obama in which Obama purportedly suggested that he wasn’t born in the United States. The quote is an internet hoax and was never said by Obama, who was born in Hawaii. After reading the fake quote, Kernen said that “the question is whether there was a time in Obama’s life where he thought it was, I don’t know, more attractive to be a more international type guy and maybe didn’t change the impression that he wasn’t. I don’t know.” He sourced the quote to a “report that was on some of the conservative websites” and added that he hasn’t “even confirmed it.” Watch: KERNEN: There is a weird — in that same report that was on some of the conservative websites and I haven’t even confirmed it, Donald, but there was a quote from one of his debates when he was running for state senator, I believe, and one of his opponents said, well, you know, you weren’t — this was at the time when it still — the Kenya thing was still on some of his biographies or something and the guy said, ‘Well, you know, you weren’t even born here,’ and he said, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter if I wasn’t born here, I’m running for — I’m not running for president’ at the time. And it was a quote that looked like it was right from a debate. I don’t know whether you saw it. I’m going to look it up right now. TRUMP: There was a quote — KERNEN: — but from him. And almost so — but the question is whether there was a time in his life where he thought it was, I don’t know, more attractive to be a more international type guy and maybe didn’t change the impression that he wasn’t. I don’t know. The CNBC anchor appears to be referring to an internet rumor about an exchange that allegedly happened during a 2004 Illinois debate between Alan Keyes and then-state senator Obama during their campaign for the state’s U.S. Senate seat. However, an adviser to the 2004 Keyes campaign who attended the Keyes-Obama debates told Media Matters that the purported exchange is a “hoax.”

Today, in almost back-to-back segments, Fox & Friends assisted Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus by airing portions of a new RNC ad — and then they aired a Fox montage supposedly “looking” at Obama’s record ahead of tonight’s State of the Union speech. Can you tell which is which? Here’s one of the videos: And here’s the other: It’s not that easy to tell, is it? While the “Political Ad” text in the upper left-hand corner of the first clip is a giveaway that it’s the real ad from the RNC, Fox & Friends ‘ montage looks an awful lot like something a Republican organization would air.

Convicted criminal James O’Keefe has released a new video — this time attacking Huffington Post reporter Sam Stein and the Economic Policy Institute, a non-partisan progressive think tank. Journalists covering the story should be aware of O’Keefe’s history of lies and deception. James O’Keefe: A history of lies, falsehoods, and deception O’Keefe Doctored NPR Video. In March, O’Keefe was caught falsely claimed  that the video campaign was a “nationwide ACORN child prostitution investigation” implicating many ACORN employees. But in at least six of the eight  heavily edited videos  produced by O’Keefe and Giles and distributed by Andrew Breitbart, either the activists did not clearly tell the ACORN employees that they were planning to engage in child prostitution; or the ACORN employees refused to help them or apparently deliberately misled them; or ACORN employees contacted the police following their visit. Law Enforcement Officials Criticize O’Keefe’s “Highly Selective Editing Of Reality.”  Three separate investigations  cleared  ACORN workers of any criminal wrongdoing, and a December 22, 2009  report  by the Congressional Research Service stated that California and Maryland criminal laws may have been violated by the undisclosed taping done by O’Keefe. California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown, Jr. pointed out that the videotapes were “severely edited by O’Keefe.” In a statement, Brown  said , “The evidence illustrates … that things are not always as partisan zealots portray them through highly selective editing of reality. Sometimes a fuller truth is found on the cutting room floor.” Likewise, a March 1  New York Daily News   article  reported that “a law enforcement source” said of O’Keefe and Giles: “They edited the tape to meet their agenda.” A March 2  New York Post   article , headlined “ACORN set up by vidiots: DA,” reported of O’Keefe and Giles’ ACORN tapes: “Many of the seemingly crime-encouraging answers were taken out of context so as to appear more sinister, sources said.” Breitbart And O’Keefe Withheld Exculpatory LA ACORN Video For Two Months.  For more than two months after Andrew Breitbart’s BigGovernment.com website  began  posting videos in which O’Keefe and Giles supposedly posed as a pimp and prostitute in ACORN offices, O’Keefe and his cohorts withheld video that directly contradicted what they suggested the videos showed. In September 2009, Giles and Big Government editor-in-chief Mike Flynn had both  falsely claimed  that every ACORN office O’Keefe and Giles visited had offered to help them. Also during September 2009, both Breitbart and O’Keefe were asked directly by reporters whether any ACORN offices had refused to help; Breitbart and O’Keefe chose not to disclose the existence of a tape that showed at least one ACORN worker who refused to help. In a video  released  November 16, 2009, O’Keefe finally acknowledged that a Los Angeles ACORN worker they filmed in August 2009 “would not assist us obtain a house for our illegal activities.” O’Keefe Pleaded Guilty To Misdemeanor Criminal Charge Of Entering Senate Office Under False Pretenses.  As  reported  by  The Times-Picayune  on May 26: The four defendants who were arrested in January in Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office in the Hale Boggs federal complex in New Orleans pleaded guilty Wednesday morning in federal court to entering real property belonging to the United States under false pretenses. Magistrate Judge Daniel Knowles III sentenced Stan Dai, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan each to two years probation, a fine of $1,500 and 75 hours of community service during their first year of probation. James O’Keefe, as leader of the group and famous for posing as a pimp in ACORN office videos, received three years of probation, a fine of $1,500 and 100 hours of community service. O’Keefe’s BigGovernment Video Omits Relevant Clip In Claiming That “Census Supervisors” Were “Systemically Encouraging Employees To Falsify Information On Their Time Sheets.”  In a ten-minute  article  reported that Liz Farkas, a college friend of O’Keefe’s while at Rutgers University, said she “grew disillusioned” after O’Keefe asked Farkas to help deceptively “edit the script” of a video involving a nurse at the University of California at Los Angeles.

In recent months, human infomercial/Fox News political analyst Dick Morris has conducted interviews with presidential candidates Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann. Morris has promoted the interviews in a series of emails to his mailing list, at least nine of which indicate they were “paid for” by the Cain and Bachmann campaigns. This year, Morris has made a big show about how he isn’t going to officially endorse any of the candidates in the Republican presidential primary. During a June appearance on Fox & Friends, Morris explained that, though he has been keeping in touch with some of the candidates, he is not endorsing someone “because I want to be impartial in my commentary.” Any time Dick Morris is claiming to do something out of an adherence to an ethical code, it should ring alarm bells , and this is no different. While Morris says he is not endorsing because he wants to remain “impartial,” it seems that Morris is avoiding supporting a specific candidate so that he can take money from as many of them as possible.

Reporting that  Speaker John Boehner was “facing a rebellion among conservative Republicans” over his proposal to avoid default, the Wall Street Journal had an interesting take on Boehner’s very public effort to cajole media conservatives into backing his plan: Mr. Boehner (R., Ohio) stayed largely behind the scenes Tuesday, though he made a pitch for his plan after a GOP meeting. This image of Boehner working tirelessly behind the scenes to avoid a default crisis is pure conservative fantasy. After all, Boehner kicked off his day pitching his plan very publicly on Cincinnati conservative radio host Brian Thomas’s KRC morning show. Boehner’s afternoon included a call to GOP leader Rush Limbaugh’s radio show seeking Limbaugh’s approval for the plan : What exactly would Boehner have to do for the Journal to acknowledge that he’s not working “behind the scenes”?
